"Robinson paints in a fluid expressionism that owes something to Jean-Michel Basquiat and something to the German expressionists who rose to prominence between the world wars…he favors slashing strokes that connect into solid features, creating mood as well as character with bright, unmodulated colors."
- Regina Hackett, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Joey M. Robinson was ten years old when his mother Alma, a Newark social worker, used her savings to move the family into Colonnade Park, a multi-high rise apartment building designed by Mies van der Rohe. Already exhibiting a passion for creating original art, Robinson's palate was informed by his new, minimalist environment. This early influence prepared his hand and eye for the kind of pure form and color Robinson would become synonymous with throughout his career. In his teens the family moved from Newark to Durham, NC and he would also spend some time in Washington D.C. before eventually finding his home in Seattle.

Mr. Robinson's work has been featured on the front pages of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (P-I), the Seattle Times and the King County Journal as well as on the ABC dramatic television series, Grey's Anatomy.

His 2003 show Movement at the Pitcairn Scott Gallery caught media attention for its massive canvases and bold, tropical colors that captured mood and motion in fresh new ways. In 2005 Robinson's Black Maids Tribute at the Art Institute of Seattle told in simple words and stark, compelling images, the stories of African American women who served as domestic servants. In 2007, he served as a guest artist for the New Jersey Historical Society's exhibition on the 1967 Newark Riots.

Later, he spent two years under the mentorship of abstract artists Kate Ashton and Ann Gulumbuk while living in San Diego. After his return to Seattle, Robinson attended the Northwest School of Encausting in Seattle. Most recently, the Seattle Art Museums's 2020 show: New Art/New Year exhibited his encaustic paintings. The sense of freedom Robinson's work acquired in San Diego is juxtaposed here against the weight of the wax.

Joey M. Robinson is an abstract painter, portrait artist, photographer and storyteller currently residing in Seattle, Washington.
